About Us

The Bakersfield Chapter was chartered in July 1971. Today, its members extend throughout Kern County with a primary concentration in Bakersfield, and meet monthly in Bakersfield.

The Chapter participates in a variety of local events including community outreach projects such as our ‘Block Kids’, a Lego Building Block Competition and MAGIC Camp (Mentoring A Girl in Construction) at local sites such at the C.A.L.M. Zoo. The Chapter offers educational speakers at its monthly membership meetings, which are open to the public, and provides opportunities to network with others in the construction industry. Each year members participate in the National Association of Women WIC (Women in Construction) Week, a program to increase awareness and advance the cause of women in construction. The chapter offers college scholarships, attends regional and national conferences designed to educate its members in the field of construction.

The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) is an international association of women employed in all areas of the construction industry from skilled trades to business ownership. NAWIC was started in 1955 in Fort Worth, Texas and since that time it has grown to a membership of over 5,500 women with close to 200 chapters in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom.

With almost 900,000 women working in construction today, the industry is becoming more accepting of their non-traditional roles. To learn more about the history of NAWIC, click here.
